Bike trip starts tomorrow!

After many months of anticipation, Ginny and I are on the precipice of starting our 3 month bike trip through SE Asia. We fly out of Auckland tonight and will arrive in Hanoi tomorrow morning. The bikes are boxed up, the panniers packed and now we just need to get our bodies conditioned to riding bikes again as we haven't done much riding since our 1 week long bike trip a couple months ago around New Plymouth/Wanganui/National Park in New Zealand's North Island.
After I get some dental work done in Hanoi, the plan for our SE Asia trip is to ride our bikes from Hanoi, Vietnam to Singapore, which is approximately 5,000 km via the route that we're going. The route will take us through Vietnam, Laos, back into Vietnam, into Cambodia, through Thailand and Malaysia and then we will finish in Singapore in about 3 months time. We're not expecting to ride the entire distance and will take no shame in hopping on a bus, train or boat with our bikes from time to time. As the temperature and humidity rise as we head south, I suspect that Ginny will regularly be looking up the bus and/or train options.
So what are we excited about (other than not working and getting to travel for the next 3 months)? We're definitely excited about the different types of food that we'll eat and the people that we will meet along the way. We're excited to explore and learn about different cultures and places in SE Asia. We're excited to be in the saddle day in and day out and experience a new part of the world on our bikes. Most of all, we're excited for this amazing adventure of a lifetime that will most definitely leave us with many lasting memories.
What are we nervous about? It's all going to be very foreign and unfamiliar. Other than Thailand, we haven't visited any of these countries before so don't know exactly what to expect. We don't speak the languages and won't know many people along the way, so we'll have to be resilient, self sufficient and savvy travelers. It's going to be HOT so we'll need to be smart about when we ride, staying hydrated and not overdoing it - we're on vacation after all! I'm a little nervous about the various diseases (e.g., Dengue Fever, Malaria, etc) that exist in some of the areas through which we'll travel. Lastly, I've heard that the traffic can be pretty insane in many areas of SE Asia so we'll have to ride cautiously and will likely pick the less traveled routes whenever possible.
I'm planning to update this travel blog at least weekly to share our experience, travel insights, mishaps (hopefully not too many or serious) and any other gems that we come across as we make our way through SE Asia. I hope you find it interesting and I welcome all feedback!
